Fluffing

I'm at it again.........wandering .........! I haven't made a decision on the new bed linens for my room, or the drapery material or the paint color for my walls(which I probably should have done first).....so my room is on hold for the moment. Which leaves my little mind to do what it loves to do best....wander! Sometimes it just takes off on it's own and I have no control. This time though I was able to keep a slight reign on it and keep it focused for at least 10 minutes! Remember my wonderful hutch that I got at a fantastic deal?? You can see it here.

I have tried several times to decorate it and each time I re-do the decor, I live with it for a while and then decide to try it a different way. But I'm just not "feeling" it. Ya know??? My kitchen is basically rustic country french, reds, yellows, greens, blues, roosters, etc., etc.,I live in a rental so I can't change the wonderful wood wall behind the hutch or the 1970's counter top or loverly carpet. But I can paint, change the window treatments and decor (all within a budget of course) Basically use what I have or what treasures I might find out thrifting. So if you all can give me some ideas, I can at least have an idea of items to search for while I'm thrifting. Right now I don't have a clue. I'm clueless! I do love my new dishes and the other items, but there just isn't any WOW factor. So, I'm asking you wonderful ladies to help a poor girl out. What would you add, a plant?, cookbooks?, an architectural piece? pattern?, a couple small pictures? Maybe remove something??? Any suggestion would be appreciated . I'm trying to really make 2010 a productive one and the top of my list is to finally (after a year) get settled into my house.

Close up of my sweet new dishes.

Until Later,
~Toni~

  1. Sometimes 'fresh eyes' are helpful. I loooove your new dishes.

My 2 cents - I think that because the 'EAT' letters are so big, it would be nice to leave the middle shelf as is and have small items anchoring the fruit tray on the bottom shelf. Preferably to match the red of the upper shelves.

Or perhaps move the new plates to anchor the top shelf, move the transferware plate to the middle shelf and move the roosters to the bottom shelf. Just a couple of suggestions.

  2. I love the red and white...personally, I think it looks great. But if I would suggest anything, I might think of adding a little ivy plant or something tucked in the corner with the ivy cascading over the rails. A pop of green might just spruce it up and a plant will soften it a bit.

  3. I like what you've started. I might break it up a little by moving some of the color around. Put the roosterwith the flowers on the top shelf, mix it up and add some more color. Here's my hutch in the dining room....

  4. Aren't those dishes great! Well, if it were me I'd use some scrapbook paper, wallpaper, giftwrap whatever to line the backs of the hutch. You can attach it with double stick tape some glue dots. That would give everything a nice background to pop against.

I like the big letters - I would add a plate on each side - didn't you get 4 rooster plates. Or add two transferware plates. Not sure about the pig- you may need something shorter on the bottom shelf.

It's hard - I usually have to add, subtract, add, start over until it feels right to me. Sometimes I have to leave it for a few days and something comes to me.

    Have fun!

  5. Hi Toni,
I think you have a good handle on your hutch. My only thought was that it might benefit from a little greenery.
I'm having the same problem you are with getting my guest bedroom finished. I'm having a hard time deciding on the bedding and I can't move forward with the room until I make that decision. Hopefully this weekend I will get the inspiration I need to finish.
    Good luck with your projects.

  7. I think I might move the EAT to the middle shelf so your eye goes to middle first and not to the top shelf. Then your eye will travle up or down to experience the rest of the shelves. If you want to add some texture you could tack a small piece of chicken wire to the bottom shelf with some wallpaper borden featuring roosters behind it. But do what makes you feel good then it will be just right.

  8. Hi Toni,
Thanks for commenting on my blog. I love yours, I am a new follower.
I have a hutch similar to yours and I love to re-do it for every season. Your plates are awesome, I do a lot of red & white too. My suggestion is to throw some black into the mix. Someone told me a long time ago that every room needs just a touch of black. It makes everything pop. If you could find some black & white check plates (just 2 or 3) to mix in with your rooster ones & maybe a black frame with a favorite number in it. Then a plant. That's my 2 cents. Lisa
